Berat or Tirana – Which Albanian City Should You Visit?

privacy-policy-disclaimers

Berat or Tirana? That is a tough one! I’ve spent time in both cities and enjoy each one immensely. In fact, Berat and Tirana are my two favourite cities in Albania.

They are very different, so I’m going to give you all the information and let you decide which is better for you. Because honestly, I love both Tirana and Berat and think they are equally as worthwhile for their own reasons.

Berat or Tirana – Which Albanian City Should You Visit?

If you’re arriving in Albania by air, you’ll land in Tirana. At the moment it’s the only international airport. Even if you decide that Berat is better for you, I recommend spending two days in Tirana, and then head to Berat.

If you’re in a hurry skip ahead to the summary of the differences between Tirana and Berat.

Where are Tirana and Berat?

Tirana and Berat are 100 km apart. Tirana is basically in the middle of Albania, about 35 km from the Adriatic Sea. Berat is further south and more inland.

While Tirana is closer to Shkoder and Albania’s alpine region, Berat is closer to the Albanian Riviera.

The Culture in Tirana and Berat

Beautiful Berat

Tirana is Albania’s capital city. It’s very walkable, with nearly all the sites located in the centre.

Tirana has a bit of quirky feel mostly due to the mix of architecture styles – traditional neo-classical buildings next to communist era blocks and avant-garde high rises. There’s lots of street art, and cafes are everywhere. It’s very safe.

Berat is much smaller than Tirana. Technically it’s a city, but it feels more like a town. It’s very beautiful and historic, with a UNESCO designated old town. It’s much more laid back and far less urban than Tirana.

Tourism is a big factor in Berat – it’s one of the most visited destinations in Albania. During winter the city clears out and just the residents are left. Some restaurants and hotels close. Tirana on the other hand is a year round city – everything stays open.

Which is Easier to Get to, Berat or Tirana?

Tirana is easier to get to. It has an international airport and bus terminal.

Berat is relatively easy to get to also, but unless you’re driving in from another location in Albania or a neighbouring country, you’re going to have to go through Tirana to get to Berat.

Berat is a major tourist destination, so there are direct buses from many Albanian cities, especially Vlore, Saranda, Tirana and Durres.

Which City Has More Attractions, Berat or Tirana?

Tirana has more attractions than Berat. If you want to learn about the brutal communist regime, Tirana is the place to do it. Many of Tirana’s sites are former communist buildings.

You can visit the former dictator’s home, tour underground bunkers, and visit the building where the secret police carried out their surveillance on the public.

Berat’s sites are almost entirely of a historic nature. Byzantine churches, ruins of ancient mosques, and Albania’s largest castle.

Things to do in Tirana

  • Skanderbeg Square: The huge, main square in the centre of the city. A social and cultural meeting point. Historic Et’hem Bey Mosque is there.
  • Bunk’Art 2: Museum inside a communist bunker focused on the activities of Albania’s secret police, the Sigurimi.
  • House of Leaves: House formerly used for the surveillance of Albanians during the communist dictatorship.
  • The Pyramid: Huge pyramid now used as public space. It was originally built as a mausoleum for Albania’s communist dictator, Enver Hoxha.
  • Blloku: Vibrant neighbourhood full of restaurants, bars and cafes, which was off limits to Albanians during communism. Enver Hoxha’s former home can easily be seen in Blloku.
  • Dajti Ekspres: The longest cable car ride in the Balkans.
  • Pazari i Ri: The main market of Tirana selling souvenirs and locally produced items.
  • Tanner’s Bridge: 18th century Ottoman bridge in the middle of Tirana.
  • Namazgah Mosque: The largest mosque in the Balkans. New, but beautiful.

Things to do in Berat

  • Berat Castle: One of the oldest living castles in Europe. Locals still live within the castle walls today. There are several important Byzantine churches in the Castle.
  • Onurfi Iconograhic Museum: Located in the historic Assumption of St. Mary Cathedral, it contains astonishing icons and iconostasis.
  • St. Spiridon Orthodox Church: Historic Orthodox church built in 1862.
  • Ethnographic Museum: One of the best ethnographic museums in Albania.
  • King Mosque: 15th century mosque with a beautiful painted wooden ceiling.
  • Bulevardi Republika: Main pedestrian street lined with cafes and restaurants.
  • Church of Saint Michael: 14th century Byzantine era Orthodox church.
  • Mangalem Quarter: Historic Islamic side of Berat with Ottoman era homes and cobblestone streets.
  • Gorica Quarter: Historic Christian side of Berat with traditional stone homes and narrow cobblestone streets.

Is Tirana Better than Berat for Day Trips?

Kruja is only 1 hour from Tirana

Yes, Tirana is better connected for day trips. However, Berat is in the middle of wine country – so if you want to explore Albania’s viticulture, Berat is better.

The best day trips from Tirana are:

  • Durres: Coastal city on the Adriatic Sea (beaches), 37 km from Tirana.
  • Golem: Beach resort town on the Adriatic Sea, 55 km from Tirana.
  • Kruja: Historic mountain town with a castle, 40 km from Tirana.
  • Berat: You can visit Berat as a day trip from Tirana. It’s 100 km from Tirana.

The best day trips from Berat are:

  • Alpeta Agrotourism and Winery: One of the best vineyards in Albania, only 13 km from Berat.
  • Tomorri Mountain National Park: Beautiful national park full of nature and hiking trails, it’s 23 km from Berat.
  • Osumi Canyon: Known as Albania’s Grand Canyon, it’s 60 km from Berat.

Does Berat or Tirana Have Better Food?

The Berat specialty dish Vienez i Berati (thin steak rolled around cheese and walnuts)

Having eaten extensively in both cities, I think the food is equally as good, but Tirana has more variety than Berat.

You’ll find a lot of traditional Albanian food in Berat restaurants, with some Greek dishes. Many places I ate at in Berat had moussaka, and I saw lots of other regional dishes that cross both borders like byrek (pita in Greece) and speca te mbushura (stuffed peppers).

Tirana has many more restaurants than Berat, and there’s a lot of seafood because of the proximity to the coast. In fact, the seafood is excellent. There’s also a real brunch scene in Tirana, in addition to the cafes that are everywhere.

There’s also more variety in Tirana. While I can’t really say that Tirana has an impressive international food scene, you can find decent pizza, falafel and Tex-Mex. You can read all about my favourite Tirana restaurants here.

Is Berat Cheaper than Tirana?

Yes, Berat is cheaper than Tirana. Tirana is the capital, so everything costs more, especially hotels and restaurant meals. But compared to other European capitals, Tirana is still a bargain.

Tirana is about 25% more expensive than Berat when looking at hotels, transportation and eating out.

Which one is More Beautiful?

Mangalem Quarter, Berat
The Mangalem Quarter of Berat

Berat is more beautiful than Tirana – it’s one of the most scenic destinations in the country. With the Osum River dividing the city in two, and historic Ottoman homes climbing up the hillsides on both sides, it’s basically a post card everywhere you look.

Which City is More Touristy?

Berat is more touristy than Tirana. This is one of Albania’s most visited places, and a very popular day trip from the Riviera and Tirana. The last time I visited in mid October there were still lots of tourists.

But apart from the usual souvenirs sold on the streets, Berat still feels authentic. It isn’t over-commercialized like the beach resort town of Ksamil.

Tirana gets tourists also, but not tons, and it’s a lot bigger than Berat so the tourists kind of blend in more.

Where is the Nightlife Better?

Tirana has better night life. I’m not even sure if Berat has any night life, per se. I haven’t seen any clubs or big lounges in Berat, ever. There are plenty of places to have drinks, but nothing like a proper club.

Tirana isn’t famous for night life either, but it definitely has a lot more than Berat. The Blloku area in particular is known for night life.

I’m not a bar person, but I have walked through Blloku on Sunday mornings and seen the aftermath of the previous night!

Where is the Shopping Better?

There is a lot more shopping in Tirana. Tirana has malls (Berat does not), and plenty of shops of all kinds in the centre.

But if all you want are souvenirs, I would actually buy those in Berat. They’ll be locally produced and probably cheaper than in Tirana.

When I need to get anything while travelling around Albania – beauty products, clothing, shoes – I always wait until I reach Tirana.

Is Berat or Tirana Better for Solo Travellers

I’ve travelled solo in both cities. In terms of safety, I felt equally as safe in Tirana as Berat. Albania in general is very safe, and many visitors remark on this.

Berat is cheaper than Tirana, so that’s a plus for solo travellers, but Tirana is more lively than Berat, so better for meeting other people.

Which One is Better for Families?

Grand Park in Tirana

I think Tirana is better for families. It’s a very flat, walkable city. Berat is also walkable, but there’s a lot of steep cobblestone streets – not great for young children.

Tirana has more parks for children, including a very large one with a lake (Grand Park).

The sites of Berat are very historic, and many of them are churches. Tirana has some pretty funky street art, lots of communist stuff and in general sites that would be more interesting to kids and teenagers.

Where to Stay

Tirana has a wide variety of accommodation choices. My favourite places to stay in Tirana are:

Luxury hotel: Maritim Hotel Plaza Tirana
Mid-priced hotel: Hotel Colosseo
Budget hotel: Albanopolis
Hostel: Red Goat Hostel

Berat has some really beautiful and atmospheric guest houses and small hotels. My favourite places to stay in Berat are:

Luxury hotel: Beratino Hotel
Mid-priced hotel: Hotel Mangalemi
Budget hotel: Ador Boutique Hotel
Hostel: Hanna’s Hostel

The Final Verdict: Berat or Tirana

If you enjoy urban centres and are interested in Albania’s communist past, Tirana is better.

History lovers and those looking for a slower-paced, closer to nature holiday will enjoy Berat more. Berat is also more romantic, with some gorgeous traditional guest houses.

Last Words on Berat or Tirana – Which Albanian City Should You Visit?

Both cities are deserving of a visit. And since Tirana is the main gateway into Albania, you may not have to choose.

My advice? If Tirana is more for you, spend most of your time there and visit Berat as a daytrip or overnight excursion. There’s a reason Berat is a UNESCO site and one of the most popular places in Albania. You shouldn’t miss it altogether.

If Berat is more for you, spend a day or two in Tirana on your way into or out of Albania. Tirana is a wonderfully manageable city and full of character.
